Gilde des sommeliers of Belgium. Affiliated to the international association of sommelier Sunday, 14th October 2007 Press Release This Sunday 14th October, the « Gilde of the Sommelier from Belgium » organised the national contest of the « Best Sommelier of Belgium Ruinart Trophy 2007 ». Twelve candidates were present in the morning for a very exciting semi-final.
During the afternoon, the final was held in the room “le Foyer” of the
Radisson Hotel in Brussels. The finalists chosen in the theoretical examinations faced themselves in the 6 practical examinations. These were composed of a wine tasting, a wine settling, a wine menu correction, an agreement dish and wine, a cigare service and finally the identification of 4 teas. To ensure the supervision of the competence of these wine service professionals and of the serious contest, the organisation committee received the support of personalities from all aspects of the profession (sommelier, press specialists, trade and education). All the contest took place under the careful look of the Members of the Ruinart House, the contest sponsor, and was supervised by Maître Caroline Raeymaekers, bailiff by De Meuter-Couvreur in Antwerp. A warm and numerous audience cheered, supported or just discovered the difficulties that represent the multi-facets of this job. At the end of a fierce contest, where all the professional qualities of the candidates were underlined, William Wouters, chairman of the Gilde of Sommeliers from Belgium thanked all the sponsors as well as all the people that took part directly or indirectly in the success of this contest. During the traditional gilde feast, prepared in the Radisson SAS by the Yves Mattagne team, more than 200 people gathered once more and greeted the decision announced by the chairman with an enormous ovation:
